Essential oils can be effective and safe in preventing unwanted critters from sneaking into your home and disrupting your yard and garden. Want to keep ants away from your picnic? Give these essential oil tips a try!
Geranium’s sweet smell appeals to many people, but deters many insects. You could plant geranium flowers, but if you don’t have a green thumb, essential oils can do the trick.
Geranium essential oil is great for keeping flies, mosquitoes, and ticks away. Diffusing geranium oil or applying it topically can protect against bugs while you’re outside enjoying your yard, as well as keeping them out of your home.
Arachnophobes, listen up! Peppermint oil is an effective spider deterrent. Try this spray to prevent spiders from entering where they aren’t welcome:
- 6 drops of peppermint oil
- A shot of liquid dishwashing soap
- Water to fill
- A small (8 oz) spray bottle
Combine all ingredients together in the spray bottle and shake it up, then spray wherever spiders can enter your home. For added protection, spray the exterior perimeter of your home in addition to your home’s windows and entrances.
Mice also dislike peppermint’s fresh scent and will likely be deterred. Spray around entrances at least once a week and clean your home consistently to keep your space rodent and spider-free.
Basil essential oil has been found to repel mosquitoes, making it ideal to use in the summertime. If you live in a wet, humid climate, or near a lake, river, or other body of water, basil is definitely an oil you’ll want to have in your collection!
Additionally, basil has been found to contain larvicidal properties, meaning it is a natural counteragent to mosquito larvae. Diffuse it in your backyard to keep the mosquitoes away.
Lemongrass and Citronella
Lemongrass and citronella are closely related oils that both work well at preventing pests. To combat an ant problem in your home or yard, make and use your own repellant spray. Combine 10 drops of lemongrass or citronella essential oil with equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle, and spritz it wherever ants seem to congregate (kitchen, patio, etc.). As with all pest prevention techniques, keep your home tidy so it’s less appealing to insects and vermin.
Citronella can be a powerful mosquito repellant. Diffusing citronella essential oil can protect your guests from mosquitos at a backyard barbecue. You can also apply it to exposed skin to help prevent mosquito bites.
Like peppermint, spearmint is an excellent spider repellant. Its scent is less harsh, so if you are looking for a sweeter smelling alternative, spearmint is a great option. Spritz near your garden to keep pests away from your fresh flowers and food.
If you are already dealing with the consequences of a bug problem, try applying spearmint oil topically in 2-5% dilution to soothe reddened, irritated skin.
