    Fun Facts

The word pepper is derived from the Latin word piper, which in turn is taken from the Sanskrit word pippali which means "long pepper." It has been used since early times as a form of currency as the worth of the peppercorns was widely recognized. Additionally, many European countries including France, Portugal, and the Dutch often went to war in the middle ages to fight for this lucrative trade in South Asia. Egyptians utilized black pepper in the embalming process and kernels were found in Ramesses II's nose.
