Essential Oils for Hair

No one likes a bad hair day. And yet, it can be extremely difficult to know what products will give you the hair you have always wanted. Read on to learn how to improve the appearance of your hair and scalp with essential oils.

Essential Oil Hair Care

Essential oils can help you get the luscious locks you have always dreamed about. From extra shininess to hiding the signs of dandruff, essential oils have got you covered. But first, you will need to choose a great carrier oil for hair. Here are a few excellent options:

Almond Oil

With hair-nourishing vitamins A and E, almond oil is a fantastic choice for soft, smooth hair.

Apricot Kernel Oil

Apricot oil can help moisturize the scalp, helping mitigate the dry and flakiness you’re trying to hide. It also contains vitamin A and vitamin E, which are known to be hair-nourishing.

Argan Oil

A strong source of oleic and linoleic fatty acids, argan oil can help improve the appearance of hair even the stuff you hit with powerful heat and UV radiation. It is also a lighter oil, making it easier to wash out.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a heavy oil, best used on thick, troublesome hair.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many uses, including deeply moisturizing your hair and scalp.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin seed oil can get your hair back to the length you want. With its light, pleasant smell, it won’t overpower the essential oils you choose to use with it.

Flaxseed Oil

This light oil is a favorite for people with curly hair.

Hempseed Oil

Hempseed oil offers natural sun protection for your hair and scalp.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is commonly found in commercial hair products, because it is an ideal oil for your hair. It is especially beneficial for people looking for improved appearance of red or dry scalps.

Once you decide on your carrier oil, you can select from a variety of essential oils to mix in for added benefits.

Hair Appearance

Bergamot essential oil is great for giving your hair extra shine. It can make dull hair look radiant again.

Sweet basil oil can add volume and bounce to your hair.

For a natural lightening effect on your hair, try applying lemon essential oil.

Shampoo Smells

Nothing beats hopping into the shower first thing in the morning and waking up to the invigorating scent of your shampoo. If you want a shampoo that will start your day off with zing, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil scent into your shampoo. Try the following suggestions.

Rose

Rose smells heavenly and can bring balance at the same time.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon bark essential oil will give you that exotic, spicy smell we all know and love. At the same time, it is the perfect addition to a warming, soothing scalp massage.

Lavender

Hugely popular, lavender is known for its calming properties and gentle, floral smell.

Peppermint

Not only does peppermint give you that fun, tingly feeling, but it smells sweet and delicious. It will also add some pep to your step!

Patchouli

Closely related to mint, patchouli smells sweet and fresh. It is also known for improving the appearance of skin and wrinkles.

Chamomile

Exotic and rich smelling, chamomile essential oil is great for relaxing.

Calming Conditioner

When added to one of the carrier oils listed above, essential oils can provide deep conditioning treatments. These types of treatments are best done 1-2 times per week. If you have a healthy scalp, once per week should do it. To treat a dry scalp or heavily damaged hair, apply these treatments twice a week. Simple combine a few drops of your essential oil of choice with a good carrier oil for hair. Use enough to fully coat your scalp and hair. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing it off.

You can also add your favorite essential oils to your regular conditioner to boost its conditioning powers. Choose your essential oil based on the result you are looking for. Try basil for natural growth and moisture; peppermint for a dry, itchy scalp; rose for hair health; ylang ylang for hydration; and tea tree oil for dryness.

Essential oils are just what you have been missing from your hair-care routine. Add them in for that shiny, soft, healthy hair you have been waiting for.Â
